This page is where is put all my miscellaneous stuff that I'm not sure where else it should belong.

interesting links

I'm not a big fan of putting up links to other web sites, but there are few places that I think deserve a mention:

Wikipedia - I think the Wikipedia could possibly be one of the greatest achievements ever made by humanity. The amount of information in there is absolutely astounding, and it is all contributed for free by volunteers. It really does show that if people work together we can achieve great things.

Genuine Curiosity - This is a blog which has a wide range of really neat information about getting yourself organised and things like that. Very interesting.

rover user interface demonstration

Click here for the interactive Rover agent demonstration, it pops up a yellow dog that sits on your desktop and barks at you. I reckon this is the next big user interface thing to hit PCs!

I never thought anyone actually looked at this but I have had a number of emails from people who think this little add on is great. Thanks for your emails and I am glad that you enjoy it!

linux information

I have been using Linux based systems since 1994, when I first installed Slackware with 1.1.59 kernel. I use Linux for a lot of the research work in the wearable computer lab, and I have prepared a collection of notes which may be useful to people searching around for help on the web. Visit my Linux page for information about 3D and DRI configuration, Firewire 1394 based digital cameras, my Debian APT package repository, the xchanger configuration file generator, and other stuff.

project oxcart

Project Oxcart was started to replace a broken TSB41AB1 chip located inside our Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop. The chip is a 1394 Firewire controller and was blown by a voltage surge on the firewire cable that is surprisingly quite common once we did some reading on the topic. We thought it would be an interesting exercise to see if we could repair it. Yes I know that we could have bought a new motherboard with the time we spent on this, but I didn't have any funds at the time!

travel map

I found this cool web site where it generates you maps of countries you have been to. This is where I have been in the last few years:

create your own visited country map or write about it on the open travel guide

create your own personalized map of the USA or write about it on the open travel guide

create your personalized map of europe or write about it on the open travel guide

update for 2003-2006!

This rest of this section is woefully out of date. I have done too much travelling to keep track of it here - at last count I think I've been on at least a hundred flights in the last five years! :)

university of north carolina, usa - 1999
In September - December 1999 I worked at the University of North Carolina, in a small town called Chapel Hill. The department is one of the top universities for computer graphics in the whole world! I visited a number of conferences and research facilities in San Francisco, Atlanta, Washington DC, Chicago, and Kansas City.
